When Chuang Wang seized Peking, the remaining generals of the Ming Dynasty surrendered and gave up their wealth as ransom, piling up a mountain of treasure. When Chuang Wang retreated from the capital, he sent his most trusted lieutenants to hide the treasure somewhere beyond the Great Wall, intending to use it eventually to raise an army for a comeback.
In the 45th year of the Qianlong Emperor (1780), three groups fought a fierce battle somewhere in Changbai Mountains over a treasure chest. The chest not only held clues about the location of Chuang Wang's treasure, it also revealed the past history of Chuang Wang's four lieutenants and the relationship between them. A complex tale that spanned generations.
