One day, the Old Man of Nanjing and the Hermit of the East were discussing the source of all creation over a game of go, but they couldn't come to an agreement. So they decided to go ask Mumenmoku, also known as Chaos, who has been meditating ever since Creation itself. But because Mumenmoku had no eyes, nose, ears, nor mouth, he couldn't answer them. So the Hermit used Wu Li, one of Emperor Hanwudi's vassals, as the model to draw a face for Mumenmoku. Now that he has a face, Mumenmoku can see, speak and hear. After talking with the two old men, he becomes interested in the state of the world and decides to descend to the mortal realm.
